Graduate at CUFE 06/12/2011
Why I choose?
My love of economics: Through high school study, I became interested in the economic growth of my hometown which used to be the nation’s heavy-industrial base for its rich natural resources in coal. I began to think over how the goods and service markets operate under the effects of free trade and was deeply attracted by the magic function of “the invisible hand”--the market. Following my passion, at age 17, major in Economics, I entered China Economics and Management Academy (CEMA) of Central University of Finance and Economics (CUFE). At CEMA, I started to learn economics and gained a new perspective of thinking as an economist in a mathematical way.
My thought of study: I want to apply the neoclassical economic growth theory to the study of economics and investigate how endogenous technology progress, key to economic growth, comes from invisible capital investment, which is the accumulation of professional knowledge and research. I wish to increase the social welfare through my study and make contribution to the sustainable development. I hope to think from the perspective of time series in both short-run and long-run as well as take into account the historical linkages statically and dynamically in my research.
My career-plans: I am pursuing for a doctoral degree in economics. I’m planning to work as a researcher or a professor at an institute or a university. I wish to pass on advanced economics gained from your faculties and become a professor explaining economic phenomenon. My final goal is to become an economist solving problems in reality and predicting future with solid evidence.
What I offer?
Multidiscipline background and inter-discipline perspective: CEMA has provided me an academic atmosphere with professors graduated from the best universities. They introduced me to the frontier of work in economics and mathematics, giving me a broad sight into the advanced fields.
Diligence: Besides a solid academic background in mathematics, I was fortunate to grasp basic economic theory and audit several advanced graduate level courses taught by overseas professors such as Prof. Ali Khan and Prof. Ilya Segal in the process of preparing myself for advanced research. In Professor Sannikov’s course, I read a 50-page paper, and presented it to the whole class. To understand every detail in the paper, I read almost all the reference and discussed with him via e-mails. It was my first time to be an instructor and I treasured this opportunity so much that I seized every chance to make self-improvement. Thanks to CEMA, I have had many opportunities to confer with visiting scholars, which, coupled with advanced courses I took bilingually, has given me a solid command of English that is sufficient for me to undertake advanced studies and research at your university.
Leadership: The most significant achievement during my study at CUFE was my participation in 2008 College Students Research and Career-creation Program of Beijing City. The tremendous investment in the Olympic stadiums made me concerned about their post-Olympic usage. How to take maximum advantage of the Olympic stadiums to benefit both the mass welfare and the financial condition of Beijing got me to research in depth on the ticket pricing mechanism. I talked about my ideas with my friends and we shared the same hope of the prosperous post-Olympic economy. After a comprehensive review of domestic and foreign papers on this field, we focused on the ticket pricing mechanism setting up the demand-supply model and I led my team members to apply for the Program. We won the project funds. As a leader, I managed to unite our thoughts and went through frustrating moments. The toughest assignment we confronted was the data needed in building up our econometric model. We combined both the questionnaires and statistical almanac to give a better estimation of the curves so that the theory of general equilibrium guided us to an optimal price level for the stadiums. Finally our paper won the first prize in the “Cup of Challenge” competition. I treasure confidence I gained and lessons I learnt through the experience; I cherish even more the inspirations growing in me ever since.
Teamwork: My love for mathematics led me to participate in the 19th National Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling as well as the Mathematical Contest in Modeling held by the United States. I applied mathematics in developing a system to solve real world problems with strict algorithms and mathematical tools. We three had different advantages and came up with different schemes. After 3 days’ vigorous discussion and cooperation with my team members, we wrote our thesis and then I began to write the abstract to give the readers a quick understanding of our ideas. Every word I used took me a long time to reconsider. We won the competition and what we treasure most was the procedure of solving a problem on our own.
Why choose me?
I used to be the teaching assistant of Professor Segal in the course of contract theory and mechanism design. I gave exercise classes and explained the homework to the class. I enjoy teaching and learning economics and like to deal with numbers and graphs to tell the economic stories.
My career plan meets your program and we have the same goal to do further research in economics. I am good at STATA and MATLAB to do data analysis as well as solving econometric model.
Your University’s well known for nurturing academic atmosphere is an ideal place for aspiring students to keep current with the latest technologies, to set research trends, and to make innovations. I’m confident that with your distinguished faculty and recognized facilities, my potential will develop into knowledge and experience beneficial to both the United States and China. A student under background of China’s high-speed economic development may be needed, especially an energetic student good at mathematics. A combination of traditional eastern ideas and modern western technology is helpful to the further research.
Diversity Statement
I am a Chinese girl applying for the PhD program in economics at Boston University. Since China is a developing country facing economic problems, I am more concerned with economic issues at an early age. I am from a traditional Chinese family and my parents both worked in the local banking and insurance systems. My mother once worked in loan financing of corporate banking department of Industrial and Commercial Bank of China in Liaoning Province and gave loans to industrial corporations major in coal transportation. As a heavy industrial province, Liaoning suffered serious pollution. My hometown was rich in coal and improper development not only destroyed the environment but also used up all the natural resources. Therefore, I want to do further study in economics, especially in econometrics, so that I can apply theoretical analysis to the real world and solve problems. My Father used to be the manager of the sales in Pacific Insurance Agency and he retired to start another career in Beijing. He had published 5 traditional Chinese books such as the Art of War in his calligraphy under the Guangming Daily Publishing Press.
At an early age I was cultivated to think independently and started school prior to my generation. Halfway through second grade, I was advanced another year. It took me some time to handle the transfer while my enthusiastic hardworking and independent thinking made me stand out. I am good at mathematics since primary school.
I have worked for Beijing Institute of New Technology Applications, Beijing Academy of Science and Technology as a research assistant of Pattern Recognition Research Team on the project of Multi-feature recognition system. This is the most advanced system in that field in China and promising to be widely used.
I have an internship for China Council for the Promotion of International Trade as an assistant at the Market Research Division of the Economic Information Department for the Project of Chinese Enterprises "Going Global" Development Report. The book for 2009-2010 is published and my name is assigned as a data collector who helped "Survey on Current Conditions of and Intention for Outbound Investment by Chinese Enterprises" and gather related materials on new issues and requirements that Chinese enterprises are facing during their operations.
I led a team of Post-Olympics economy analysis on the ticket pricing mechanism of the Olympic stadiums--From the perspective of demand and supply model. We applied for 2008 College Students Research and Career-creation Programs of Beijing City and won the fund of 10000RMB.Our project is of the only 4 projects in Science and Engineering in CUFE. We built up the specific demand and supply model for the stadium and worked out the optimal ticket price by E-views. I was the unique undergraduate participant of the 3rd Asia-Pacific Forum on Economics and Finance about New Challenges of the Global Economy in the Post-crisis Period. I gave a presentation of my paper "Analysis of Banking System of Credit Supervision and Risk Control Mechanisms by the Method of Game Theory Model" in English and discussed with professors from all over the world.
I was the only undergraduate volunteer of 2008 China Banking Association for surveying and reporting on winners of the Citi Micro-entrepreneurship Awards, CMA. During my interview to the winners of CMA, I became aware of the urgency of micro-credit for small towns in China and formed a comprehensive view of their entrepreneur as well as business in the countryside. I handed on a specific report on the winners and took some photos of the micro-entrepreneurship awards’ contribution to Chinese countryside. It is a valuable experience to work as a journalist and get access to the rural areas of China.
Besides all above, I think I am the unique who is a combination of a various experience and personal characteristics. I treasure myself as a special student with hardworking and potential abilities. Therefore I believe such a student who is also eager to pursue for a PhD in economics will add some elements to your colorful educational experience and make your diversity divergent.
